Our brains process approximately 6,000 to 50,000 thoughts a day. But we do catch ourselves experiencing brain fog or a writer’s block every once in a while. The process of creating content may flow freely, but the execution of it in written form takes a hit especially when a deadline comes calling.
Such instances can tempt you to employ artificially intelligent agents. Such software can accomplish tasks in lightning speed, free of cost, and majorly doing all the heavy lifting. It may emit a sense of productivity and efficiency, but when considering human thinking and reasoning, the question remains – Is artificial intelligence (AI) augmenting your cognitive skills, or replacing it?
When AI tools are introduced into the general workflow, the extent to which they are implemented to complete tasks is ambiguous. Thus, the line between seeking assistance from AI and completely depending on it is blurred. With advancing times come advanced requirements, which workplaces try to meet through artificially generated features.
AI taking over the world poses a growing threat especially in the professional faction. Generative AI has subbed in to accomplish daily tasks such as drafting emails, creating digital documents, and even sending text messages on command. This may appear to be time-saving and effective by theory, but will have gradual but lasting consequences on our thinking and reasoning abilities.
In order to reduce mental demands, people tend to delegate their cognitive tasks to external resources (such as a generative AI engine, in this case). Researchers called this phenomenon ‘Cognitive Offloading’, which enables the mind to make room for more tasks requiring higher thinking and problem solving skills.
Cognitive Offloading may not necessarily be a negative effect, as we use this method in day-to-day activities such as jotting down grocery items on a piece of paper instead of having to remember it by memory, or using the calculator app to simplify mathematical derivations.
Research states that conscious effort asserted to thinking helps in the development of stronger reasoning and cognitive processes. In a situation where you find yourself trying to articulate your thoughts better, look for ways to get the creative juices flowing, or just simply word an email to a client, where the brain activates the higher order thinking skills required to help you build a material from scratch.
Building strong neural pathways becomes part of that process enabling the brain to comprehend, create, and develop content using inbuilt cognitive strategies. Reasoning, understanding, and problem solving are amplified and the brain is assisted to activate dormant or less frequently used areas.
When such tasks are frequently ‘offloaded’ for Generative AI to accomplish through detailed prompts and instructions, it becomes a practice – a shortcut that is judged to produce better results than the human mind. This gradually reduces the brain’s threshold to handle complex requirements, thus begging for the intervention of an external source.
The high prevalence of AI taking over jobs and workload can never truly match the brilliance of human brain functions. With the use of AI in accomplishing crucial brain-developing tasks, the actual thinking processes take a backseat, thus sending it to a state of lethargy.
This setback encourages the brain to not work to its potential, and your ability to sit through a complex problem reduces with time. The artificially generated response will seem correct and more agreeable compared to your own judgement, thus instilling a sense of incompetence in the absence of AI.
The future of efficient professionalism is dependent on how the human mind challenges and pushes the boundaries of AI, and not the other way around. By enabling true human potential to power through, we unlock new limits to articulation, creativity, and cognitive independence in the long run.
