The Government of Karnataka led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had requested the Central government in July to sanction additional MBBS seats in government-run medical colleges in the State. The approval for extra seats to introduce an NRI (non-resident Indian) quota was sought for, from the academic year beginning 2025-26.

Against this background, Karnataka’s Minister for Medical Education Sharan Prakash Patil said that he had sent a written requisition to the Chairman of the National Medical Commission (NMC) for a 15% NRI quota sanction. That would be possible by creating 508 additional supernumerary MBBS seats across the 22 government medical colleges in Karnataka.

Minister Patil referred to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which dismissed the Punjab government’s plea seeking NRI quota expansion in undergraduate medical admissions. The top Court had called the quota expansion as “nothing but a fraud” and that it must be stopped. Patil said, “Our colleges need to become self-financed institutions. Therefore, we have requested an increase in admissions under the NRI quota. However, we have not applied yet, and we will make a decision in due time… We will study the court verdict and assess its potential impact on the State of Karnataka.” – editor@nrifocus.com
