Amit Gupta, an NRI from Gujarat, has been detained in Qatar for more than three months. While his distraught parents back in Vadodara say it’s for no reason, Qatari authorities have allegedly accused him of data theft.
Gupta’s family approached the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), requesting government intervention to bail him out of the case. His wife approached the Indian embassy in Qatar seeking justice, but in vain. A government source in India, however, said that they were closely following the case. “Our Embassy in Qatar is aware of the detention of Mr. Amit Gupta, an Indian national, by Qatari Authorities in relation to an ongoing investigation. The mission has been in touch with the family, the lawyer representing Mr. Gupta and Qatari Authorities on a regular basis. Our Embassy continues to provide all possible assistance in the matter,” the source said.
Gupta has been a resident of Qatar since 2013. He held a senior position in an IT firm. On January 1 this year, he was arrested by a Qatari security agency and has been in confinement since then. Gupta’s company has also released a statement: “We are actively coordinating with authorities in both countries and following the proper legal processes. The well-being of our colleague is our top priority.”
An online campaign to secure Gupta’s release is also in full swing. – editor@nrifocus.com
