In a vital move towards enforcing immigration laws strictly, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) deported a group of Indian nationals, who had no legal authorization, on a chartered flight to India. This was done in collaboration with the Indian government to enhance border controls and put a check on unlawful entry resulting in irregular migration.
The DHS has been working with foreign governments, including India, China, Colombia, Egypt, Peru, Ecuador, Senegal, Uzbekistan and Mauritania, to deport more than 1,60,000 individuals to over 145 countries, on about 500 international repatriation flights. These figures were reported for fiscal year 2024. DHS hopes to come down even more strongly on illegal migration, while tackling transnational smuggling networks, which abuse and exploit innocent migrants. FY2024 turns out to be the peak year for deportations compared to FY2010 when such measures were taken up in full swing.
Kristie A. Canegallo, a senior official of Homeland Security, said, “Indian nationals without a legal basis to remain in the United States are subject to swift removal, and intending migrants should not fall for the lies of smugglers who proclaim otherwise.” – editor@nrifocus.com
