In a significant breakthrough, the UAE geo-located a fugitive and returned him to India. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which serves as the National Central Bureau for Interpol, extradited the most-wanted criminal, Narender Singh, from the UAE to India. In 2023 alone, the CBI had issued around 100 Red Corner Notices and extradited 29 fugitives following requests from India.

This time it was Singh, who faced a Red Corner Notice for rioting and murder. He was wanted by the Haryana Police since his conviction in 2009. He had fled India to the UAE in 1998.

The CBI coordinated with its National Central Bureau for Interpol in Abu Dhabi, the Indian embassy, the foreign ministry, and the Haryana Police to bring Singh – ‘jailed for life’ – when Interpol issued the Notice against him last November in response to a request from India.

Singh was geo-located in the UAE by Interpol channels, and the Red Notice was circulated to all of the Interpol member countries. Geolocation means identifying the geographic location of a user or computing device via a variety of data collection mechanisms. And, geo-locating a person means to track movement and keep the subject under constant surveillance.

Despite the lapse of more than two decades for justice to prevail, the capture and return of Narender Singh to India is a success story well-written by the UAE.
