Thulasendrapuram, Tamil Nadu, India – the ancestral village of the 49th Vice-President of the United States, Kamala Harris, burst into celebration when she was elected in 2020. People gathered in droves for a communal feast, while the residents installed huge banners after her win.

Today, the same place wears a different look. The hopes of a historic victory in the US Presidential elections turning into a dream is hard to take. With the Democratic candidate losing to Republican rival Donald Trump, the people of Thulasendrapuram have nothing much to say. There’s disappointment in the air even as firecrackers meant to be set off were kept aside.

Harris, who is referred to as sister or mother as a mark of respect in her village, lost support among women and young voters in the just concluded elections. Even in Democratic strongholds, Trump’s stance on women’s welfare, anti-immigration, healthcare, social security and civil rights has garnered votes to give the former President of the US a cakewalk to the Oval Office for a non-consecutive second term. – editor@nrifocus.com
