The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), an event started by the Government of India in 2003, is celebrated once in two years to commemorate the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi in India from South Africa on January 9, 1915. Last year’s event was in Indore. The occasion also marks the contribution of the Indian community living overseas to the development of the nation.
In order to enable NRIs and those of Indian origin living abroad to participate in the event – scheduled to be held from January 8-10, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha – a website with information related to the programme has been launched by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Minister of Odisha Mohan Charan Majhi. Online registration can be made on the portal. Details on facilities such as accommodation for those days can also be accessed on the website.
During the launch, Jaishankar said that Prime Minister Modi’s regular interactions with the diaspora during his official visits abroad and the unwavering support of the latter to India’s growth story are a testimony to the strong bonds shared between India and its global community.
The event will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. President Droupadi Murmu will preside over the valedictory function. A youth edition of PBD has also been planned in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. – editor@nrifocus.com
