The introduction of a new e-passport by India has been welcomed globally for its enhanced security and compatibility.
The passport, which features embedded RFID chips, meets ICAO standards for its ability to store biometric data. The printed version of residential addresses gives way to digital storage, where applicants born only after October 1, 2023, need to provide a birth certificate with their application for a passport. This is to ensure authenticity in the documentation process, while those born before this specified date can apply for a passport by submitting their Aadhaar, PAN, or education certificates, as required.
The embedded RFID chips store personal and biometric data, including fingerprints and photographs. The facility has been rolled out in cities such as Goa and Ranchi.
The e-passport system also effectively streamlines the immigration process, eliminating the risk of fraud and identity theft.
The digital method enhances privacy. The residential address of the applicant will be shared in a scannable barcode that can be accessed only by immigration officials. The address will not be printed on the last page of the passport as done earlier.
Under the new method, single-parent families and those with estranged relatives stand to benefit as parent names of the applicant will not appear in the e-passport. – editor@nrifocus.com
