Kerala’s Sojan Joseph elected as first Labour MP of UK’s Ashford constituency

Forty-nine-year-old Sojan Joseph from a small village in India has won from the Ashford constituency in Kent County, in the U.K.’s general election. He contested as Labour party candidate and won from the constituency that was previously a Conservative stronghold.

Joseph has been living in Britain for the past 22 years. Hailing from Kaipuzha in Kottayam district of Kerala, Joseph was one of the 26 Indian-origin members of Parliament elected to the House of Commons.

A mental health nurse by profession, Joseph is employed in the public sector in Britain and is known for his socialist ideals. During his election campaign, he pledged to improve mental health services in his constituency. In a post on X, Joseph expressed his gratitude by saying, “Thank you for the honour of being elected as the first Labour MP of Ashford constituency. I am humbled with the trust you all placed in me and fully aware of the responsibilities that come with it. I will work hard for everyone in Ashford, Hawkinge and villages.” – editor@nrifocus.com
