In a dynamic attempt to promote tourism, the government of Iran has approved a visa-free policy for Indian nationals, which allows them to enter Iran once every six months.
Indian citizens holding regular passports can enter the country – without a visa – for a maximum stay of 15 days. The visa exemption is applicable only for air border entry and solely for tourism purposes. For other purposes of visit, including education or business, the standard visa application process remains. The same holds good for extended stay and multiple entries as well.
The visa-free initiative, which has been active since February 4, is expected to foster cultural exchanges and friendly relations between the two countries. Rich in history, Iran is placed fifth globally in terms of Intangible Cultural Heritage, or living heritage, as recognised by UNESCO.
It’s interesting to note that a similar visa waiver has been recently implemented by Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, for international visitors.
