Gagandeep Kaur Grewal has stepped into a trailblazing position by becoming the first female Sikh sheriff in Alberta, Canada. Her historic appointment is expected to impact Canada’s multicultural fabric, while marking a memorable milestone for Sikh communities across the world.

Grewal, originally from a village called Bhoop Nagar in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, India, moved to Canada after spending her early years in India. She made Alberta, one of Canada’s fastest developing provinces, her home.

With Alberta’s sheriff’s office playing a significant role in areas such as court security, prisoner transport, and civil enforcement, Grewal’s representation in Canada’s public service is an honour to the diaspora.

In Canada, Sikh women making a mark in the fields of policing and public safety is not quite new. The past two decades have seen Sikh women such as Corporal Rupinder Kaur, Constable Puneet Deol, and Rajbir Kaur holding vital positions in the government.

As of today, women make up 22% of police personnel in Canada; visible minorities account for about 8%.

Grewal’s appointment, which comes at a time of improving diversity in Canadian policing, is indeed a major decision taken towards an inclusive religious identity in law enforcement. – editor@nrifocus.com
