Move over Waltons, the Nahyans are here. For the first time, the House of Nahyans has joined Bloomberg’s annual ranking of family fortunes, and have done so in style. With a $305 billion fortune, the Abu Dhabi rulers topped the world’s richest list surpassing the Waltons of Walmart Inc by a cool $45 billion and pushing them to second place.

The sixth generation dynasty behind the French luxury brand Hermes added $56 billion to reach the third place. Al Thanis, the royal family of Qatar, another first time entrant, stands at No 5.

The Mars family of Mars chocolates, and the Koch family of the US follow closely. The Royal family of Saudi comes at number 7 with the Ambanis in the eighth place. Chanel’s Wertheimer family came 9th and the Thomson of Thomson Reuters family at 10th place.

Generational focus and long-term strategies were highlighted as key factors, with rise in petro-fortunes, stock prices rebounding and a steadier economy than what forecasters have predicted cited as reasons for topping the list. The sticking together of the world’s richest has helped dynasties endure downturns, wars, taxes and feuds. Buoyant markets help, but the most successful families do not care for quarterly milestones. Generational achievements are what they aims for.

Notabably, Adani and Julia Koch are the only two among the top 20 richest who experienced a decline in rankings this year.
